Private Long Term Care Insurance: To Buy or Not to Buy?

Many people are concerned about the high cost of long-term care. According to the MetLife Mature Market Institute, the national average cost of a nursing home stay is $153/day for a private room. Medicare, Medigap and regular health insurance don’t’ cover long-term care. The Health Care Financing Administration expects that nearly one-third of al nursing home costs will be paid for by patients and/or their families out of their own funds in 2001. One option for covering long-term care costs is private long-term care insurance available from numerous insurance companies.
